Process SCADA Control Systems

Process SCADA Control Panel

SCADA Overview
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems provide a centralised system for monitoring and controlling complex Distributed Control Systems (DCS) over a large geographical area. Control actions are performed by Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) distributed at the remote sites, providing measurement and control of remote operation of equipment to and from the centralised SCADA system. Based on Codra’s Panorama SCADA Suite, Hima-Sella has a proven off the shelf technology to provide a robust and flexible solution which will deliver the following benefits:

Open System Architectures and Off the Shelf Equipment
Integrating the Panorama SCADA suite we will always use recognised industry protocols i.e. OPC, DNP3, Modbus etc. transporting all data I/O related information including status and control. All workstations will be connected directly to the Network available and will be updated automatically as the functional servers are updated. By having a library of protocols you will be free to choose readily available off the shelf RTUs, Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs) and field device equipment.

Fully Redundant Server Pairs/High Availability Solution/ Remote Workstations
The system will use fully redundant server pairs, which can be situated either locally on the same site or remotely. It may be beneficial if one of the servers or server pairs is located remotely for increased system availability in the event of any incident which would require site evacuation.

Modularity-RTUs Distributed including Inter-building
The RTU is of modular construction to aid RTU design and allow for many variants to be available. This includes floor and wall mounted as a minimum.

Scalability
As new control areas need to be commissioned onto the new SCADA system, additional servers can be installed. Each functional server can accommodate in excess of 80,000+ I/O. Additional servers can be added at any time and also any additional workstations. The RTU’s have the ability to be expanded by adding further I/O cards or where increased substation I/O requirements are required, by simply adding further distributed RTU’s to the substation communications network.
